Dental & Oral Surgery Sedation

What is MAC? “Monitored Anesthesia Care” sedation, also known as MAC, is the specific anesthesia service for outpatient procedures under local anesthesia along with a carefully titrated sedation and analgesia. This service (MAC) results in improved patient comfort, less physiologic disturbance and a more rapid recovery due to the skilled continuous balancing of the depth of sedation. MAC is optimal for outpatient procedures as it helps in fast tracking.

A provider of MAC has to be qualified and skilled to rescue an airway or convert to general anesthesia if the situation demands.

The standard of care is the same as that for general anesthesia, and includes a proper pre-anesthetic checkup, standard intra-operative monitoring, and routine postoperative care.

An obvious difference exists between MAC and moderate sedation: MAC includes support of vital functions and the management of possible intra-operative problems. Monitoring comprises of continuous communication with the patient, observation of parameters such as oxygenation, ventilation, and circulation. Capnography is an essential monitoring component of MAC to detect apnea at an earliest opportunity.
